Developers are required to rapidly output industrial-strength solutions
That is why Quintessence is the developer’s friend. In a series of articles, I will explain how the platform embodies a powerful set of tools that remove complexity and aid developers in the many tedious tasks they need to perform, in order to ship a complete solution to the business.
So how do developers harness the power of Quintessence. In this first article, I will chat about a specific use case at a client using ThinkFolio©, a multi-asset trading platform. ThinkFolio© provides real-time information on trades across portfolios. The traders requested that IT create a process that would email a report displaying the company’s short bond positions at periodic intervals throughout the business day.
- The first challenge was to access the live data provided by the trading platform. The trading platform used protocol buffers to serialize their structured data. Proto definition files were supplied by ThinkFolio© describing the associated messages and services. The developers compiled the proto files and generated the associated C# code. The C# code was then registered with Quintessence. Thus within a couple of days, the live data was available to multiple languages and tools throughout the organisation.
- The second challenge involved creating a report that used a portfolio’s current holdings together with the latest trades in order to calculate the short-bond positions. The portfolio administration data had already been virtualised via Quintessence. The business analysts, therefore, had access to a portfolio’s current and historical positions. The creation of the Bond short-position report was specified using Excel. The logic was then imported into Quintessence.
- Finally, a Quintessence task was created that would generate an email with the report embedded into it as HTML. This was scheduled to run every 3 hours and at the close of business every trading day.
The solution went from specification to production in 2 weeks!
